Glendale, CA – May 26, 2013 – Over 100 bicyclists gathered at Verdugo Park on Sunday, May 19, 2013 for the First Annual Jewel City Fun & Fitness Ride, an outdoor community event organized by the Rotary Club of Glendale and Walk Bike Glendale. The event featured bike safety training for children, as well as a fun and relaxing ride through Verdugo Park and Fremont Park for families and recreational bicyclists. For experienced cyclists, there was also the Gear Grinder, a 33-mile ride through Verdugo Park and Deukmejian Wilderness Park, a mountainous terrain with elevation up to 2600 feet. Participating teams included the Poodle Riders, Team Ascencia, Team SVHS, Braces by Bergh, Woodlanders and Team Ararat.
“This event is a wonderful way to celebrate National Bike Month in May and we’re proud to partner with Walk Bike Glendale in promoting healthy living and bicycle safety for families and adults in our community,” said Dr. Brian Bergh, President of Rotary Club of Glendale.
Event organizers announced that the First Annual Jewel City Fun & Fitness Ride raised $15,000 for three local nonprofit agencies. The proceeds will support programs and services for low-income/homeless adults and children served by Ascencia, Glendale Healthy Kids and the Glendale Salvation Army.
Corporate sponsors included Glendale Adventist Hospital; Bache Capital Management; the Armenian American Chamber of Commerce; Arroyo Insurance Services; Braces by Bergh; Cal Devnich, DDS; Park Place Properties, Inc.; Sadd, Velazquez, Higashi, Shammaa; and media sponsor ABC7. Individual sponsors included Larry Tison, Gerry Tomsic and Ty Veden.
Retail vendors providing free bicycle maintenance included Performance Bikes and Izzy’s Cycles. Food vendors included Deano’s Deli and Hungry Nomad.

Community agencies participating in the resource fair included American Red Cross Glendale-Crescenta Valley Chapter, Ascencia, Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale Healthy Kids, Heal Within, YMCA of Glendale, as well as Rotary Club of Glendale Moonlight and Rotary Club of Burbank, Sunrise. Glendale Salvation Army stationed the water stops at Fremont and Deukmejian Parks.
